Largemouth Bass

Just south of Albuquerque, Peralta presents some decent opportunities for largemouth bass anglers. The Rio Grande is nearby, but the backwaters, ditches, and small ponds adjacent to the river are where you'll find more consistent bass fishing. These areas offer the warmer, still water that bass prefer. Spring and fall are the prime seasons, as the bass are more active during these times. Look for cover like submerged vegetation, fallen trees, or docks. Plastic worms, crankbaits, and spinnerbaits are all effective lures. Early morning and late evening are typically the best times to fish. A local tip: pay attention to water clarity. The Rio Grande can get muddy after rain, which can affect the fishing. Try to find areas with clearer water, even if it means venturing further from the main river channel. While trophy bass are rare, you can still find some quality fish in the 2-4 pound range. Access to these backwater areas can sometimes be tricky, so be respectful of private property and look for public access points.
