For Largemouth Bass near Tontogany, Ohio, you'll want to explore the many ponds and small lakes scattered throughout the area. Northwest Ohio is characterized by its agricultural landscape, which often includes farm ponds that can hold surprisingly good bass populations. Look for ponds with good cover, such as lily pads, submerged timber, and weed beds. The Maumee River, while not ideal for largemouth, can hold some fish in its backwaters and slower sections. Spring and early summer are excellent times to fish, as the bass are spawning and actively feeding. Topwater lures, such as frogs and buzzbaits, can be very effective during this time. As the water warms up in the summer, switch to deeper-diving crankbaits and Texas-rigged worms. Access to many of these ponds is private, so always ask for permission before fishing. Public options include some of the smaller lakes managed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The bass in these smaller waters tend to be opportunistic feeders.
