Largemouth Bass

Blackstone, Virginia, is a great jumping-off point for some classic Virginia largemouth bass fishing. The area is dotted with smaller lakes and ponds, but for a consistent bite, focus your attention on Nottoway Lake. This is a relatively shallow lake with plenty of vegetation and structure, ideal for largemouth. Spring and fall are prime times, as the bass move shallow to spawn in the spring and then feed heavily again in the fall before winter. Summer can be productive too, but you'll need to fish early and late or target deeper water. A local tip is to throw topwater lures, such as frogs or buzzbaits, around the lily pads and grass edges early in the morning or late in the evening. The bass in Nottoway Lake are known to be aggressive and willing to strike. The lake has a public boat ramp, but it's relatively small, so get there early, especially on weekends. Water clarity can vary depending on recent rainfall, so be prepared to adjust your lure selection accordingly.
