Largemouth Bass
Ashland, Wisconsin offers some surprisingly good largemouth bass fishing opportunities, particularly in the sloughs and backwaters connected to the Chequamegon Bay of Lake Superior. While the big lake itself is too cold for bass, these sheltered areas warm up nicely, creating ideal habitat. Early summer, from late May through June, is prime time as the bass move shallow to spawn. Fall can also be productive as they feed aggressively before winter. Focus on areas with submerged vegetation and woody structure. A local tip: The Fish Creek Slough, accessible from Highway 13, is a popular spot, but can get crowded. Explore some of the smaller, less well-known sloughs to the east for more solitude. The bass here aren't generally huge, averaging 1-3 pounds, but their willingness to hit topwater lures in the thick cover makes for exciting fishing.
