If you're chasing Northern Pike in Gloucester City, New Jersey, the Delaware River and its tidal tributaries offer your best shot. Unlike some of the more pristine, clear-water pike fisheries further north, here you'll be targeting them in a more urban, brackish environment. Spring is prime time, as the pike move into shallower waters to spawn. Early mornings and late afternoons are particularly productive. Look for weedy areas and submerged structure near the mouths of creeks emptying into the Delaware. Local tip: Access can be tricky. Check out the public boat launch at Proprietors Park for easy access to the river, but be aware of strong currents and boat traffic. You'll want to use heavier tackle than you might for largemouth bass – think 20-30lb braid and steel leaders. The pike here are known to be aggressive, but also wary in the clearer water, so fluorocarbon leaders can help. Don't be surprised if you hook into other species like striped bass or catfish while you're at it!
