Northern Pike
While not the first species that comes to mind when you think of Manchester, Vermont, Northern Pike do inhabit some of the larger bodies of water in the region. Lake St. Catherine, a short drive west, is your best bet for targeting these ambush predators. The lake offers plenty of weedy cover and shallow bays where pike thrive. Early spring, just after ice-out, and late fall, as the water cools, are the most productive times. Look for them near weed beds and submerged timber. Large spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and swimbaits are all effective lures. Many anglers also have success with dead bait rigs. A public boat launch is available on the lake's western shore, but be aware that it can get crowded, especially on weekends. Pike in Lake St. Catherine can reach impressive sizes, with fish over 10 pounds being relatively common.
