Pallid Sturgeon

While Tulsa isn't the first place that comes to mind for sturgeon fishing, the Arkansas River, specifically below Keystone Dam, does hold a population of pallid sturgeon. This federally endangered species makes for a unique and challenging angling pursuit. The best times to target them are typically during the cooler months, late fall through early spring, when water temperatures are lower. Focus on deep holes and areas with strong currents using heavy tackle and cut bait or nightcrawlers presented on the bottom. Public access is available at several points along the Arkansas River, but be aware of swift currents and changing water levels, especially after heavy rains. Remember that pallid sturgeon are protected, and Oklahoma regulations require immediate catch-and-release.
