Idaho Springs is a fantastic base for chasing rainbow trout in Colorado's high country. Clear Creek, which runs right through town, is a popular option, offering a mix of stocked and wild fish. While the creek is easily accessible, be prepared for some challenging wading due to the swift current and rocky bottom. For a more remote experience, explore some of the smaller tributaries that feed into Clear Creek, or head up to higher-elevation lakes like Echo Lake (near Mt. Evans), which offer stunning scenery and good fishing. Spring and fall are generally the best times to fish for rainbows in this area, as the water temperatures are more moderate. Dry-fly fishing can be effective in the summer months, especially during the morning and evening hatches. A local tip: Pay attention to the Colorado Parks and Wildlife fishing regulations, as some sections of Clear Creek may have specific restrictions. Also, be aware of rapidly changing weather conditions in the mountains.
