Rainbow Trout

While La Salle, Colorado isn't typically known as a premier trout destination, determined anglers can still find opportunities for Rainbow Trout. The South Platte River, while warmer here than in its mountain reaches, does receive occasional stockings of rainbows, particularly in the spring and fall. Small, localized irrigation ditches and reservoirs connected to the river can also hold trout. Focus your efforts on areas with current and cooler water temperatures, especially early in the morning or late in the evening. A good access point is along the public stretches of the South Platte near the Highway 85 bridge. Keep in mind that water levels can fluctuate dramatically due to irrigation demands. For success, try small spinners, worms, or PowerBait. The trout here are often smaller, but a well-placed cast can still yield a rewarding catch.
