Rainbow Trout

Rainbow trout fishing is a major draw to the Ouray, Colorado, area. The Uncompahgre River, which flows right through town, offers excellent opportunities for both wading and bank fishing. Numerous smaller creeks and streams in the surrounding mountains also hold wild and stocked rainbows. Summer is generally the best time to fish, as the snowmelt subsides and the water clears. Fly fishing is extremely popular, with dry flies like Elk Hair Caddis and Parachute Adams being effective choices. Nymphing with bead-head nymphs can also produce good results. Spin anglers can try small spinners or spoons. A local tip: early mornings and late evenings often provide the best fishing, as the trout are more active during cooler periods. Be aware of private property along the river and respect posted signs. Also, a valid Colorado fishing license is required, and regulations regarding catch-and-release may apply in certain areas.
