Rainbow Trout

Rainbow Trout fishing near Melba, Idaho, centers primarily around the small streams and rivers that feed into the Snake River. While the Snake itself isn't known for its rainbow trout population in this area, tributaries like the Indian Creek and smaller irrigation canals can provide decent fishing, especially during the cooler months. Stocking programs by Idaho Fish and Game supplement the wild populations in some of these streams. Spring and fall are the best times to target rainbows, as water temperatures are more favorable. Summer can be challenging due to low flows and warmer water. A great access point is along the Simco Road, which parallels Indian Creek. Small spinners, spoons, and bait like worms or salmon eggs work well. Fly fishing with nymphs and dry flies can also be effective, particularly during mayfly hatches. These aren't trophy-sized fish; most rainbows will be in the 8-14 inch range, but the scenic beauty of the area and the challenge of fishing small streams make for a rewarding experience.
