Rainbow Trout

While Chesterton isn't exactly a rainbow trout mecca, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources stocks trout in certain waterways in the region, providing a seasonal opportunity. Check the IDNR stocking reports to see when and where trout have been released. The East Branch of the Little Calumet River near Chesterton occasionally receives stockings. Spring and fall are the best times to fish for these stocked trout, as the water temperatures are cooler and the fish are more active. Small spinners, spoons, and live bait (like worms or salmon eggs) are effective. Be aware that these are stocked fish, so they can be relatively naive and easy to catch shortly after stocking, but they also get fished hard. A stealthy approach is key. Access to the East Branch can be found at various points along the Indiana Dunes National Park. Remember to check the regulations regarding trout fishing, as there may be size and creel limits. The trout here are primarily for put-and-take fishing, so don't expect to find a thriving wild population.
