Rainbow Trout

While Iowa might not be the first place that springs to mind for trout fishing, Colfax offers a unique opportunity to target rainbow trout in its freshwater streams and stocked ponds. The Skunk River and some smaller, spring-fed creeks in the area are periodically stocked, providing a put-and-take fishery. Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) are the prime times to fish for rainbows here, as water temperatures are cooler and the fish are more active. Summer can be challenging due to warmer water, so focus on early mornings or evenings. A great access point is the public access area along the Skunk River south of Colfax. When targeting these stocked trout, try using small spinners, spoons, or live bait like worms or corn. Fly fishing with nymphs or small streamers can also be effective. Keep in mind that the trout may be accustomed to hatchery food, so bright colors can sometimes trigger strikes. This is a great option for anglers looking for a quick trout fishing fix close to home.
