Rainbow Trout

While southwest Iowa might not be the first place that comes to mind for rainbow trout, Elk Horn actually offers some limited opportunities thanks to stocking programs in specific locations. Check with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for the most up-to-date stocking information, as locations and frequency can vary. These stockings typically occur in smaller, cooler ponds or streams that can sustain trout through the colder months. Spring and fall are the best times to fish for these stocked rainbows, as the water temperatures are more favorable. Look for areas with moving water, such as inlets or outlets, as these areas tend to hold more oxygen. A local tip: small spinners, spoons, and PowerBait are often effective for catching stocked rainbows. Keep in mind that these trout are typically stocked at a catchable size (10-14 inches), so adjust your tackle accordingly. Due to the limited nature of this fishery, practice responsible angling and consider catch-and-release to help maintain the population.
