Rainbow Trout

Rainbow trout enthusiasts will find opportunities near Joliet, Montana in the Stillwater River and its associated tributaries. While the Stillwater is better known for its brown trout and smallmouth bass, rainbows are present and can provide exciting fishing. Spring and fall are excellent times to target rainbows, as they are often more active during these cooler periods. Dry fly fishing can be productive, especially during hatches, but nymphing is often the most reliable method. Look for rainbows in riffles, runs, and near undercut banks. Be prepared for varying water conditions, as the Stillwater can fluctuate depending on irrigation needs. Remember to check the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks regulations for any specific restrictions or closures on the Stillwater River and its tributaries. Many of the access points are near bridges, but be mindful of private property and seek permission where necessary.
