Rainbow Trout

While Shaker Heights isn't typically known for trout fishing, the Doan Brook, which flows through the Shaker Lakes Park, receives occasional stockings of Rainbow Trout from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. These stockings typically occur in the spring (March-May) and sometimes in the fall (October-November). The best time to target these stocked trout is immediately after a stocking event. Check the ODNR website for stocking schedules. Small spinners, spoons, and live bait like worms or PowerBait are effective methods. Fly fishing with nymphs and small streamers can also be productive, especially in the deeper pools of the Doan Brook. Given the urban environment and relatively small size of the stream, the trout here can be easily spooked. Approach the water quietly and use stealthy tactics. Focus on areas with cover, such as overhanging vegetation or submerged logs. Access to the Doan Brook is available through the Shaker Lakes Park, but be aware of park regulations and other users. Keep in mind that water conditions can fluctuate rapidly after rain events, so check the stream flow before heading out.
