Rainbow Trout

The Nehalem River offers excellent opportunities for Rainbow Trout fishing, particularly for sea-run steelhead which are technically rainbow trout. The Nehalem's relatively pristine waters and abundant salmon runs contribute to a healthy trout population. While the main stem of the Nehalem is popular, explore the smaller tributaries for a more secluded experience. Spring and fall are prime times, coinciding with steelhead runs. Early morning and late evening often produce the best results. Fly fishing with nymphs and streamers is effective, as is using small spinners and spoons. Anglers should be aware of specific regulations regarding catch-and-release and gear restrictions on certain sections of the river. Public access is available at various points along Highway 53, which parallels much of the river. Be mindful of private property and respect landowners' rights. Check the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) regulations before heading out, as they can change seasonally.
