The Encampment River, a short drive from town, is a prime location known for its clear, cold waters and healthy trout populations. Spring and early summer, after the runoff subsides, are ideal times to fish, as the trout are actively feeding. Fall can also be productive before the water gets too cold. A great access point is the public fishing area along Highway 70, where you can wade and cast to rising trout. Local tip: be sure to bring a variety of flies, including nymphs and dry flies, to match the prevailing hatches. The rainbows in this area are known to be selective, so presentation is key. Remember to check Wyoming Game and Fish regulations before heading out, as special restrictions may apply to certain sections of the river.
