Sheepshead, known for their distinctive teeth and knack for stealing bait, can be found near Simmesport, Louisiana, thanks to the Atchafalaya River's link to the Gulf. While not as abundant as in coastal areas, they do venture up the river in search of brackish water and structure. The best time to target them is during the spring and fall, when water temperatures are moderate. Look for Sheepshead around pilings, docks, and any submerged structure in the Atchafalaya or connecting bayous. They are masters of camouflage, blending seamlessly with their surroundings. Fiddler crabs are their favorite food, but live shrimp or oysters also work well. Fish tight to the structure, as they rarely stray far. A short-shanked, strong hook is essential to avoid getting broken off. One local tip: many anglers use a Carolina rig with just enough weight to hold bottom in the current. Also, be prepared for a subtle bite; Sheepshead are notorious for nibbling before committing. Patience and a quick hookset are crucial for success. While Simmesport isn't a Sheepshead hotspot, the challenge of catching them in this unique environment makes it rewarding.
