Sheepshead

If you're targeting sheepshead around Edisto Beach, South Carolina, think structure. These fish are notorious for their love of pilings, docks, and submerged timber, especially in the brackish waters of the Edisto River and its creeks. Spring and fall are prime times, as water temperatures moderate and sheepshead move inshore to spawn and feed heavily before winter. Fiddler crabs are the local go-to bait, presented on a jig head right next to the structure. A light wire hook is recommended as these fish are notorious bait stealers, and you'll need to detect the subtle bite quickly. Access is good from the public boat ramp at Edisto Beach State Park, but be mindful of strong currents around the inlets; these currents dictate sheepshead behavior and where they hold.
