Smallmouth Bass

The Housatonic River near Falls Village is a smallmouth bass haven, offering diverse structure and excellent water quality. Smallies here thrive on crayfish, insects, and smaller baitfish. Spring and fall are prime times. In spring, target pre-spawn staging areas with crankbaits and jigs. As water warms, move to deeper, faster water with tubes and drop-shot rigs. Fall sees the fish fattening up for winter, so larger presentations like swimbaits can be effective. Access is available at several points along Route 7, but be mindful of private property. The smallmouth in this section of the Housatonic are known for their fighting spirit, often punching well above their weight class, so be sure to bring appropriate tackle. Also, pay attention to water levels, as the river can fluctuate significantly with rainfall.
