Smallmouth Bass

While Allen Park is primarily known for its proximity to the Detroit River's walleye fishery, don't completely discount the smallmouth bass opportunities in the surrounding canals and connected lakes. These urban waterways can hold some surprisingly good smallmouth, especially if you know where to look. Focus on areas with rocky bottoms, docks, and bridge pilings. Spring and fall are the peak seasons, when water temperatures are more favorable. A local tip: the water clarity can vary significantly depending on rainfall and river flow, so be prepared to adjust your lure selection accordingly. Using brightly colored lures or those with rattles can be effective in stained water. Access to some areas may be limited, so research public access points beforehand. Expect to find smallmouth in the 1-3 pound range, with the occasional larger fish.
