Smallmouth Bass

Bloomingdale, Michigan, offers some surprisingly good smallmouth bass fishing in its inland lakes and the Black River. While not as famous as some of the larger Michigan smallie destinations, the relative lack of pressure can make for exciting days on the water. The Black River, though shallow in spots, holds some feisty smallmouth, especially around fallen timber and rocky outcroppings. For lake fishing, target areas with submerged vegetation or near drop-offs. Spring (late May-June) is prime time, as the bass move into shallower waters to spawn. Fall is also productive as they aggressively feed before winter. A local tip: Focus on the areas near the bridges on the Black River; they often hold fish. Also, be aware that the river can be difficult to navigate with larger boats, so canoes or kayaks are often preferred. The smallmouth here tend to be opportunistic feeders, so a variety of lures, from crankbaits to tubes, can be effective.
