Smallmouth Bass

While Largemouth Bass get more attention, Smallmouth Bass can be found in some of the deeper, cooler lakes and rivers around Cass City. The Cass River itself holds a population of smallmouth, albeit one that requires some exploring to find consistent action. Focus on areas with rocky bottoms, current breaks, and submerged structure. The best time to target smallmouth is during the summer months (July-August) when the water has warmed up. Try using crayfish imitations, tubes, or small crankbaits. Access to the Cass River is available at several bridge crossings and parks, but be prepared to wade or use a small boat to reach the prime fishing spots. The smallmouth in this area tend to be scrappy fighters, often punching above their weight. Be aware that water levels in the Cass can fluctuate, so check conditions before you go.
