Smallmouth Bass

If you're chasing smallmouth in Southeast Michigan, Deerfield offers some under-the-radar opportunities. The River Raisin flows right through town and holds a decent population of smallies. It's not a trophy fishery, but you can find some scrappy fish in the 1-3 pound range. Focus on rocky areas, deeper pools, and submerged structure. Spring and fall are prime times, with pre-spawn and post-spawn activity really heating things up. Wading is possible in many stretches, but be mindful of water levels, especially after heavy rains. A kayak or canoe can open up more of the river. Local tip: try accessing the river near the Deerfield Road bridge – there's some public land there. Small crankbaits, tubes, and spinnerbaits are local favorites. Be prepared for some stained water, so brighter colors can help.
