Smallmouth Bass

While Fennville might be better known for Largemouth, don't overlook the Smallmouth Bass opportunities in the Kalamazoo River. This river system holds some surprisingly good Smallmouth, particularly in the areas with rocky bottoms and faster currents. Focus your efforts upstream from Fennville, towards Allegan, for the best results. The Smallmouth here aren't as plentiful as Largemouth, but they can be scrappy fighters. Peak season is typically late spring through early fall, when water temperatures are warmer. Wading is possible in some sections of the river, but be aware of slippery rocks and fluctuating water levels. A good starting point is the public access site near the Allegan Dam. Try using tubes, crankbaits, and small spinnerbaits around rocky structures and current breaks. The Smallmouth in the Kalamazoo River tend to be a bit smaller on average, but what they lack in size, they make up for in fight.
