Smallmouth Bass

While Flint isn't typically known as a Smallmouth Bass hotspot, you can find some decent fishing opportunities in the Flint River and its associated lakes. The Flint River itself, particularly sections with rocky bottoms and riffles, can hold Smallmouth, though they are less abundant than Largemouth. Holloway Reservoir and Mott Lake, while primarily Largemouth fisheries, also have some Smallmouth present. Target rocky points, bridge pilings, and areas with current. Late spring and early fall are generally the best times to fish for Smallmouth in this area. A practical piece of advice: Water clarity in the Flint River can vary greatly depending on rainfall, so check local conditions before heading out. Also, be prepared to cover some ground to find the Smallmouth. Smallmouth in the Flint area tend to be smaller on average than in other parts of the state, but they can still provide a fun and challenging fishing experience. Use smaller lures and finesse techniques to entice them.
