Smallmouth Bass

Gladwin County, Michigan, might be better known for its Largemouth Bass and panfish, but don't overlook the Smallmouth Bass opportunities! While not as abundant as in some other Michigan locations, you can find quality smallies in the Cedar River and its impoundments, such as Secord Lake and Wixom Lake. Focus your efforts on areas with rocky bottoms, current, and submerged wood. The best time to target Smallmouth here is in the spring, after the spawn, and again in the fall, as water temperatures cool. Look for them near rocky points and drop-offs. A small crankbait or tube jig can be highly effective. One local tip: many anglers have success targeting smallmouth around the bridge pilings and riprap along the Cedar River. Be prepared to adjust your tactics based on water clarity, which can vary depending on rainfall. Access to the river and lakes is available through several public access sites and boat launches.
