Smallmouth Bass

Lincoln, Michigan, while not a major metropolis, offers access to some fantastic smallmouth bass fishing in the surrounding areas. While not directly on the Great Lakes, several inland lakes and rivers in the region hold healthy populations of smallies. Look to the Au Sable River and its tributaries for prime smallmouth habitat. These fish thrive in the clear, rocky waters. Summer is generally the best time to target them, particularly early morning and late evening when the water is cooler. Wading the river with fly fishing gear or light spinning tackle is a popular approach. Crawfish imitations, both in lure and fly form, are highly effective. Remember that the Au Sable is a renowned trout stream, so be mindful of regulations and practice catch-and-release whenever possible. Access to the river is available at several road crossings and designated access points along M-65. Smallmouth in this area are known for their aggressive strikes and acrobatic fights, making for an exciting angling experience.
