Smallmouth Bass

Milan, Michigan, offers some surprisingly good smallmouth bass fishing, particularly in the Huron River as it winds through the area. The river's rocky bottom and moderate current provide ideal habitat for bronzebacks. Spring, just after the spawn, and fall, as the fish are fattening up for winter, are prime times. Focus on areas with current breaks, such as submerged logs, bridge pilings, and rocky outcroppings. A local tip: wading the river near the Arkona Road bridge can be productive, but be mindful of water levels after heavy rains. The smallmouth here tend to be opportunistic feeders, so a variety of lures, from crankbaits to tubes, can be effective. Don't overlook live bait like crawfish, either. The Huron River's smallmouth population is healthy, but catch-and-release is encouraged to maintain the quality of the fishery.
