Smallmouth Bass

Smallmouth bass fishing near Morenci centers on the smaller rivers and streams that crisscross the area. While not known for trophy smallies, these waterways offer a chance to tangle with feisty bronzebacks in a more intimate setting. The River Raisin, though impacted by agricultural runoff, holds pockets of smallmouth bass, particularly in areas with rocky bottoms and current breaks. Late spring and early summer (May-June) are prime times, as the bass are actively feeding after the spawn. Wading is often necessary to reach the best spots. Local advice: try targeting areas near bridge pilings or fallen trees. Small crankbaits and tubes are effective. Be mindful of private property and obtain permission before accessing the river. Smallmouth bass in this region are generally 10-15 inches, with larger fish being a rewarding challenge.
