Smallmouth Bass

Smallmouth bass fishing near Rosebush, MI, might not be the first thing that comes to mind, but the Chippewa River and its tributaries offer exciting opportunities for bronzebacks. While not known for trophy smallmouth, the river provides a scenic and productive fishery. Summer and early fall are ideal, when the water has warmed up and the fish are actively feeding. Target rocky riffles, deep pools, and submerged logs. Wading is a popular and effective way to fish these rivers, but be cautious of slippery rocks and changing water levels. A local access tip: There are several bridges and road crossings along the Chippewa River that provide easy access points for wading or launching a small kayak. Look for areas where the river narrows or deepens, as these often hold concentrations of smallmouth. Expect to catch fish in the 1-3 pound range, with the occasional larger specimen.
