Smallmouth Bass

While Swartz Creek itself might not be a smallmouth bass hotspot, venturing a bit further into the surrounding areas of Genesee County, Michigan, can yield some success. Focus on rivers with rocky bottoms and faster currents. The Flint River, while not known for huge numbers, does hold some smallmouth, particularly in the stretches further from urban areas. Fall is an excellent time to target them, as they bulk up before winter. Look for deeper pools and rocky runs. A practical tip: wading can be a good way to access some of the more secluded spots, but be mindful of water levels and currents. Also, using crayfish imitations or tubes dragged along the bottom can be very effective. The smallmouth in this area may not be trophy-sized, but they are scrappy fighters, and hooking into one can be a memorable experience. Be aware of private property and respect landowners' rights when accessing the river.
