Several of the area's clear, natural lakes hold quality smallies, providing a different angling experience. Diamond Lake is again a strong contender, with rocky points and drop-offs that attract these hard-fighting fish. Look for smallmouth near structure like docks, submerged wood, and weed edges. The best time to target them is during the pre-spawn period in late spring and again in the fall as the water cools. Throwing crankbaits, tubes, and drop-shot rigs are all effective techniques. A key to success here is understanding the local water conditions. Diamond Lake, for example, can experience significant weed growth in the summer, so adjust your tactics accordingly. Public access to Diamond Lake is available via a boat launch on the southwest side of the lake. Remember to check for any specific regulations regarding bass size and creel limits.
