Smallmouth Bass

Vanderbilt, Michigan provides a fantastic base for targeting smallmouth bass in some of the region's pristine freshwater systems. The Sturgeon River is a local hotspot, known for its clear, cool waters and rocky structure that smallies love. Also, nearby Burt Lake and Mullett Lake, while larger, hold good populations of smallmouth. Summer and early fall are generally the best times, as the water has warmed up and the bass are actively feeding. Look for rocky shorelines, submerged logs, and drop-offs. A great local tactic is to use crayfish imitations – either crankbaits or soft plastics – as the bass in this area are particularly fond of them. Public access to the Sturgeon River can be found at several points along Old 27, but be prepared for some wading as bank fishing can be limited. The smallmouth here are known for their aggressive strikes and hard fighting ability, so hold on tight!
