Smallmouth Bass

Smallmouth bass fishing near Erhard, Minnesota, requires a bit more searching, but the rewards can be worth it. While largemouth are more prevalent in many of the smaller, weedy lakes, some of the larger, clearer lakes with rock structure hold smallmouth populations. Look for rocky points, submerged humps, and areas with current. Early summer (June/July) and fall (September/October) are excellent times to target them. Topwater lures like poppers and walking baits can be incredibly exciting during low-light conditions. Tubes, crankbaits, and drop-shot rigs also work well. A local tip: focus on areas near inlets or outlets, as these areas often hold baitfish that attract smallmouth. Be aware that water clarity can vary greatly between lakes, so adjust your lure selection accordingly. Smallmouth in this region tend to be scrappy fighters, often exceeding 3-4 pounds. Access to some of the better smallmouth lakes may require a bit of a drive, so plan your trip accordingly.
