Smallmouth Bass

While Carthage, Missouri, isn't necessarily known as a smallmouth bass mecca, dedicated anglers can find some decent bronzeback action in the Spring River. This river offers classic smallmouth habitat: rocky riffles, deep pools, and plenty of current. Early spring and fall are your best bets, when the water temperatures are cooler and the fish are more active. Look for smallmouth around boulders, ledges, and current breaks. A crawdad imitation crankbait or a tube bait dragged along the bottom are excellent choices. Wading the Spring River is a popular way to target smallmouth, but be aware of changing water levels, especially after rainfall. Access points are limited, so do some research beforehand to find suitable spots. The smallmouth in this area tend to be scrappy fighters, so be prepared for a good battle.
