Smallmouth Bass

Smallmouth Bass fishing isn't the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Gower, Missouri, but a little exploration can yield some surprising results. While there aren't any renowned smallmouth rivers immediately adjacent to Gower, a short drive to the north or east can put you on the Platte River or some of its tributaries, which hold decent populations of smallmouth. Focus on rocky areas, riffles, and pools. Spring and fall are generally the best times to target smallmouth, as the water temperatures are more favorable. Small crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and tube jigs are all effective. Wading is often the best way to access these areas, so be sure to wear appropriate footwear. A local tip: Look for areas where the river narrows and the current is swift – these are prime holding spots for smallmouth. The smallmouth here may not be giants, but they are scrappy fighters and can provide a fun day of fishing.
