If you're looking for scrappy smallmouth action in southwest Missouri, Grand Falls Plaza offers some surprisingly good opportunities. While not as famous as the Ozark rivers further east, the Spring River near Grand Falls Plaza holds a healthy population of smallmouth. The key here is targeting rocky areas and current breaks. Focus on the stretch of the Spring River immediately below Grand Falls, a natural waterfall and local landmark. This area offers excellent habitat and is easily accessible. Spring and fall are prime times, as the water temperatures are ideal and the fish are actively feeding. Wading is possible in many areas, but be cautious of slippery rocks and swift currents. A good starting point is the public access area just downstream of the falls. Local anglers often use crawfish-imitating crankbaits and jigs, but don't overlook topwater lures early and late in the day. Remember to check local regulations regarding size and creel limits before you hit the water. The smallmouth here aren't giants, but their willingness to strike and fight hard makes for an enjoyable day on the water.
