Smallmouth Bass

While Lake of the Ozarks is renowned for its largemouth, don't overlook the opportunity to target smallmouth bass near McCord Bend. Smallmouth thrive in the clearer, rockier sections of the lake, especially along the main channel and around points. Spring and fall are also prime times for smallmouth, with pre-spawn and post-spawn activity offering excellent fishing. Look for areas with current, as smallmouth prefer moving water. A local's secret is to use crayfish-imitating lures or small swimbaits near rocky banks. Access to these areas is readily available via numerous public boat ramps around McCord Bend. Keep an eye on water clarity, as smallmouth can be more sensitive to changes in water conditions. Many anglers find success targeting smallmouth around the Highway 5 bridge and the bluffs near the dam. Expect hard-fighting fish that will test your tackle.
