Smallmouth Bass

Smallmouth bass enthusiasts heading to Ozark, Missouri, should set their sights on the James River and its tributaries. These clear, rocky streams provide ideal habitat for smallmouth, often referred to as "smallies." Spring and fall are the peak seasons. In the spring, focus on pre-spawn smallmouth holding in deeper pools and runs. As the water warms, they'll move into shallower riffles to spawn. Topwater lures, crankbaits, and tubes are all effective. Fall is another great time as smallmouth feed aggressively before winter. Look for them near rocky points and submerged timber. The James River offers numerous access points, but be aware that some sections are only accessible by canoe or kayak. Wading can also be productive, but exercise caution due to slippery rocks and fluctuating water levels. A local tip: pay attention to water clarity; smallmouth prefer clear water, so target sections of the river that are less turbid.
