Smallmouth Bass
If you're looking for hard-fighting smallmouth bass in central New York, Canastota provides access to some excellent waters. The Erie Canal, a historic waterway, runs right through the town and offers surprisingly good smallmouth habitat. Look for rocky areas, bridge pilings, and weed edges along the canal. These bass are opportunistic feeders. The best time to target them is during the warmer months, from late spring through fall. Early morning and late evening are prime times. A local tip: access the canal easily from the public launch near the Canastota Canal Town Museum. Also, be aware that the canal's water levels can fluctuate, so check conditions before you go. These Erie Canal smallmouths are known for their aggressive strikes, so be prepared for a fight!
