Smallmouth Bass
Central New York's Rome area holds some fantastic smallmouth bass fishing, particularly in the Erie Canal and the Mohawk River. The canal, with its rocky bottom and varied structure, provides excellent habitat for smallies. The Mohawk River, especially the stretches with faster currents and deeper pools, is another prime location. Look for smallmouth around bridge pilings, rock outcroppings, and any current breaks. The warmer months, from late spring through early fall (June-September), are ideal. Smallmouth are aggressive and readily take a variety of lures. A local's secret is to fish the canal early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid boat traffic. Public access to the canal is available at several points throughout Rome, and the Mohawk River has numerous access points along Route 49. Smallmouth in this area tend to be scrappy fighters, making for an exciting angling experience.
