Smallmouth Bass
If you're chasing smallmouth in western New York, South Dayton puts you in prime position to access some fantastic fisheries. The Cattaraugus Creek is the star of the show here, known for its healthy smallmouth population and challenging currents. Spring and fall are generally the best times to fish, as the bass are more active in the cooler water temperatures. Summer can be productive too, but be prepared to fish deeper and earlier or later in the day. Access to the 'Catt' can be tricky, but there are several public access points along Route 353 and some county roads. Be mindful of private property. Local tip: Pay attention to water levels after rain events; the Cattaraugus can get blown out quickly, but clears relatively fast. When the water is slightly stained, try using tube baits or crankbaits that imitate crawfish, a staple in their diet. The smallmouth here are known for their fighting spirit, so hold on tight!
