Smallmouth Bass
If you're looking for a more secluded smallmouth bass experience in Northeast Ohio, Kirtland Hills offers some unique opportunities. While not known for large rivers, the smaller tributaries and creeks that feed into the Chagrin River system here hold surprisingly good populations of smallies. These fish tend to be scrappy and aggressive, often hitting topwater lures or small crankbaits with gusto. The best time to target them is during the warmer months, from late spring through early fall, when water temperatures are more favorable. Access can be a challenge, as many of these waterways are surrounded by private property. However, there are a few public access points along the East Branch of the Chagrin River near shared park lands. Be prepared to wade, as bank fishing is often limited. Remember that water levels can fluctuate rapidly after rain, so check conditions before you go. Due to the smaller size of the waterways, these smallmouth tend to be on the smaller side as well, with most averaging 10-14 inches, but their fight more than makes up for their size!
