Smallmouth Bass

If you're after smallmouth bass in the Barlow, Oregon area, the Willamette River is your go-to destination. This river system offers rocky bottoms and swift currents that smallmouth thrive in. Unlike largemouth which prefer still, weedy areas, smallmouth are found in the moving water of the main river and its tributaries. The best time to target them is late spring through early fall, when the water levels are more stable. Try using crankbaits, tubes, or small swimbaits fished along rocky banks and near current breaks. The boat ramp at Champoeg State Heritage Area provides excellent access to the river. Be prepared for swift currents and changing water conditions, as the Willamette can be unpredictable. Smallmouth in this area are known for their fight, so hold on tight!
