Smallmouth Bass

While not as abundant as largemouth, smallmouth bass can be found in some of the larger rivers near Fife. The Puyallup River, despite its strong currents, holds a population of smallmouth, particularly in areas with rocky bottoms and slower-moving water. The Nisqually River, a bit further south, is another potential option. Summer and early fall are prime times for smallmouth, as the water warms and they become more active. Crankbaits, tubes, and jigs are effective lures. Focus on areas with current breaks, such as rocks, logs, and bridge pilings. A good access point to the Puyallup is near the Pioneer Park boat launch, though be cautious of the swift currents. Be prepared to use heavier tackle to handle the current and the fish. The smallmouth in these rivers are known for their aggressive strikes and powerful fights, making for an exciting angling experience. Consider using polarized sunglasses to spot fish holding near structure.
