Smallmouth Bass

While La Conner, Washington is more known for its saltwater access, venturing inland slightly will open up some smallmouth bass opportunities. The Skagit River, upstream from La Conner, offers some decent smallmouth bass fishing, though it isn't a primary destination. Focus on areas with rocky bottoms, current breaks, and deeper pools. Late summer and early fall are typically the best times to target these fish, as the water levels have stabilized and the fish are actively feeding. Small crankbaits, tubes, and jigs are effective lures. Access can be found at various boat launches and parks along the river. Be aware of strong currents and changing water levels, especially after rainfall. The smallmouth bass in this region tend to be on the smaller side, but they are scrappy fighters and provide an enjoyable experience, especially when targeting them on light tackle. Remember to check the WDFW regulations for the Skagit River before heading out.
