Smallmouth Bass

The Skykomish River itself isn't ideal for smallmouth bass due to its strong currents and cold water. However, venturing slightly further afield to the Snoqualmie River system, which the Skykomish feeds into, provides better smallmouth habitat. Focus your efforts on the lower Snoqualmie, closer to its confluence with the Skykomish and Snohomish Rivers. Summer and early fall are the best times to target smallmouth, as the water warms up and the fish become more active. Look for rocky areas, current breaks, and deeper pools. Small crankbaits, tubes, and jigs are effective lures. Access can be challenging, with limited public access points. Look for areas where roads run close to the river, or consider hiring a local guide who knows the river well. The smallmouth in this area are generally smaller, but they are aggressive and provide a fun fight. Check WDFW regulations for specific rules.
