Smallmouth Bass

While not as common as Largemouth Bass in the immediate vicinity of Wilkeson, Washington, Smallmouth Bass can be found in some of the larger rivers and reservoirs within a reasonable drive. Consider exploring the Puyallup River system or some of the larger lakes in Pierce County. Smallmouth prefer rocky or gravelly bottoms and can be found in areas with moderate current. Late spring through fall are the most productive times, with the pre-spawn period in spring being particularly good. Target rocky points, ledges, and submerged structure. Crayfish imitations, tubes, and crankbaits are effective lures. Look for areas where the river widens and slows down, creating ideal habitat. Check local regulations and access points before heading out. Be aware that Smallmouth populations may be less dense than in other regions, so persistence and covering water are important.
